INTERNSHIP SUMMARY

During the summer of 2017, I served as a multimedia storytelling intern at Adobe in San Jose, California. I worked on the Adobe Research team helping to communicate the key elements of highly technical research, abstracts, and work done by Adobe researchers for audiences both within Adobe and outside of Adobe. These solutions took the form of infographics, UI/UX solutions, graphic visualizations, video and storyboards that were then used by researchers and multiple channels within Adobe.

OUTCOME

Delivery of 10+ multimedia deliverables for the Adobe Research team about abstracts and services not yet released to specific Adobe products.

ROLE

UX Designer, Videographer, Visual Designer & Photographer

DURATION

3 Months

INTERNSHIP GOALS

The goal of this internship was to deliver highly developed multimedia solutions that Adobe Research could use and share throughout their appropriate channels showcasing the technical work of researchers to broader audiences in easy to understand ways. Listed below are some of the duties I had to preform in order to achieve that goal:

  • Interview researchers about their technical work

  • Understand the key elements of the researchers’ work: what is it, how it works, why it is important, what could be done with it

  • Create story ideas to share the key elements of the researchers’ work

  • Identify the most compelling multimedia approach for sharing the stories, and develop storyboards

INTERNSHIP TIMELINE & PROCESS

01. DISCOVERY

It begins with discovery. During this stage I read the abstracts and papers published by Adobe researchers so that I can understand the entire scope of what their work is, what it's trying to accomplish and ways in which I can communicate it to an audience. While reading these technical papers, I am taking a lot of notes on key ideas that can expanded upon, asking questions to clarify certain topics and doing background research on the field of their work.

02. COLLABORATION

Next I meet with the researchers one on one to discuss ways in which I can translate their work into multimedia stories. During this stage, I engage in a very focused dialogue about key elements of their research, their process and overall input so that I can create solutions that reflects this feedback in order to represent their work in the best way possible.

03. CREATION

I then work independently creating the solutions in a timely manner with feedback check in's, making sure that everybody is in line with the solution as I work on it. This is the part of the process where I am primarily focused on the creation of the solutions through the use of the adobe products and sketching.

04. ITERATION/FEEDBACK

Once I have created a rough draft of the solution, I would then go back to meet with the researchers and get their feedback on the project. I usually ask them if they like the direction it is going, if it is conveying the message of the what the research is, and for any feedback they might have as well. This back and forth conversation helps refine the solution until it is eventually finished, and both parties are happy with the result.

05. DELIVERY

And once the solution has been finalized and approved by all parties, it is then considered complete. From there, the final solution is given to not only the researcher I was working with, but also to any/all appropriate Adobe channels for internal and external usage.

SKETCHING & PLANNING THE DELIVERABLES

Once I had read each research paper, I would then pull out my sketchbook and begin sketching out any ideas I had or possible ways to visualize the research from a storytelling perspective. Sketching was a fantastic way to convert the technical writing of these research abstracts into storytelling visuals or narratives that I could then begin to fully flesh out in more detail. I would always refer to my sketches whenever meeting with researchers or my mentor to help illustrate my ideas and to also get feedback before moving further along in the process.

THE FINAL WORK & DELIVERABLES

By the end of my internship , I was able to complete 10 multimedia solutions for Adobe Research however, due to NDA, I am only able to showcase a few of my design solutions and only through these thumbnails that reveal no confidential information. Once the appropriate amount of time has passed, and the work that I completed is acceptable to showcase, I will share what I can about my work here. Unfortunately for now I am not able to do so at this time - sorry!

REFLECTING ON MY INTERNSHIP

My experience at Adobe was absolutely amazing to say the least. It was my first internship for a huge company in the silicon valley and I wanted to make sure I took advantage of that opportunity every day I was there. I got to learn from some of the brightest minds and also work alongside them in order to create some fantastic multimedia solutions that the Adobe research team could use for their internal and external channels.

There was definitely a learning curve at the beginning when I first started the internship when I was tasked with reading and translating very technical research papers into multimedia solutions but, with the help of my mentor, I was able to accomplish it. This internship showed me so much about the future of design and technology and allowed me to become a stronger communicator & storyteller because of it.
